Barbara
Cornthwaite has a busy life, and yet she
finds time to write an entertaining parallel to Jane Austen's
Emma. Charity Envieth
Not is the story of George Knightley,
the man who, unbeknownst to her, loves the strong-minded Emma
Woodhouse. Charity is richly layered with the day-to-day life
of a country gentleman, and the clever shades of the humor and
language Austen is known
for.
Laura
Hile is an entertainer at heart,
and loves to make people laugh. You can find her Sir Walter
series here,
along with other comedy shorts. When Laura isn't scribbling
out a humorous piece, she's writing serious Regency. Mare's
Nest has all the customary
elements of a Regency Romance—arrogant, Alpha Male hero,
beautiful, intelligent, poor heroine with a spinster
sister-in-law to keep—but the difference is, she makes them
all entertaining and
real.
Susan
Kaye is easily bored
and tends to write short What-ifs when her novel is not going
well. She has a lot of online stories that hopefully entertain
you as much in the reading as they do the writing. Click over

When I Dream, I
Have You ~ The story of Persuasion is
predicated on Anne and Frederick meeting in Somerset in the
year '14. What if Frederick had gone to visit Edward in
Shropshire after being thrown ashore? And Anne had gone to
Bath without seeing him again? A What-if that tells how it
might have gone.
The Little Particulars of
The Circumstance ~ One of my favorite scenes in Persuasion is
when Frederick Wentworth
goes to the Uppercross Cottage looking for Louisa and
Henrietta. He finds himself Anne Elliot as she cares for
little Charles. In the original, Frederick rescues her from
the onerous little Walter, and not much more. In this version,
Mr Roberts, the apothecary, declares a quarantine! This story
combines a little bit of "Outbreak!" with a lot of "It
Happened One Night." Happy ending included at no
charge.
Pleasant
Days ~ Pleasant Days takes
place two years after Frederick Wentworth and Anne Elliot's
broken engagement. While sailing to Ireland to visit family,
the Elliots encounter smugglers. It would seem that Frederick
Wentworth has changed professions in hopes of gaining fortune
more quickly than possible in the Royal Navy. But Anne begins
to question this assumption when she must depend upon his
skill and cunning to keep her alive on the rugged Irish
coast.
No collection
of free online stories would be complete without Love Suffers Long and Is
Kind. This five-volume tome was written by Laura Hile
and Susan Kaye back when they didn't know any better. Jane
Austen herself sets up the premise that if Louisa Musgrove and
her family had pressed the point, Frederick Wentworth was
obligated by honor to marry her. If this had happened, how
would eveyone's life have turned out? We explored that idea
and many found they liked our solution better. It's not for
the faint of heart, but if you want a great, l-o-n-g read,
this is the one!
